Most of what we build is not a kids' fort. It is a working room in the trees — a place to write, think, or put your in-laws that happens to sit fourteen feet in the air.
Built like a small house, because it is one
Our studios are framed, insulated, and flashed to the same standard as ground-floor construction: closed-cell insulation in the floor (the cold comes from below when there is no ground under you), a mini-split or a marine wood stove for heat, and power and data run up the support in weathertight conduit.
Sixty-eight degrees in January, a desk that holds two monitors, and tree shadow moving across the wall all afternoon.
The guest stay question
Plenty of clients ask about renting their build out. We build to residential code wherever the county requires it, and we will tell you plainly during design what your jurisdiction allows before you spend money on the idea — short-term rental rules in the mountain counties differ ridge to ridge.
- Sleeping loft or daybed, sized to how you will actually use it
- Heat and insulation for four-season use
- Power, data, and lighting on a buried feed
- Composting toilet or a plumbed half-bath where grade allows
- Kettle shelf. Non-negotiable, in our experience.
